As we all know, brushing 2-3 times daily is important for good oral health. However, when asking my patients if they floss every day, their response is disappointing. What many people forget is that every tooth has 5 surfaces, NOT 3…which is what brushing covers. It is very important to use an interdental device such as floss to clean the areas that brushing misses. Here are a few reasons why you should never skip flossing again!
- It increases your risk for cavities
Plaque forms on ALL surfaces of the teeth including in between. Food particles also congregate between the teeth which contributes to tooth decay. Even the best of toothbrushes can’t reach all the surfaces of your teeth, but floss can. Thus, flossing at least once daily targets plaque and food particles that would otherwise stay between your teeth possibly causing cavities to form. - It increases your risk for gum disease
Flossing doesn’t just remove plaque and food debris from between teeth but also around the gumline. Accumulation of bacteria around the gumline contributes to gum disease (gingivitis and periodontal disease). If bacteria is left around the gumline, tooth loss can occur. - It increases your risk for heart disease
I know it sounds far-fetched, but it has been proven that there is a link between gum disease and cardiovascular disease. This is primarily because your gingiva contains tiny blood vessels in which bacteria can travel through and enter the bloodstream. The presence of this bacteria in the bloodstream can potentially harden in the arteries causing stroke or heart attack. Isn’t one minute of your day worth your life? - It creates bad breath
As mentioned above, when you skip flossing, you’re allowing plaque and food particles to accumulate in between your teeth. These food particles begin to degenerate, producing foul odors. This contributes to bad breath.
