When I first heard about Invisalign Braces when it came out in the late 90’s, I along with most everybody else doubted the process of creating a series of aligners that could be worn incrementally to straighten misaligned teeth from a single impression! As time has passed, all of the doubts have been eliminated. Invisalign, has moved to the forefront of the braces market allowing all dentists, not just orthodontist, to create smiles that can change a person’s whole appearance!

Created as a braces alternative, Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that patients swap out every two weeks to slowly but surely re-align their teeth. Aligners can be left out for up to four hours each day, making eating, photos and big events seamless.
Invisalign received Food and Drug Administration approval in 1998 after snagging $140 million in venture capital funding. Once the company went public in 2001, an additional $130 million was earned. An internal conflict popped up soon after, with founder Chishti getting the boot from the company. However, the aptly named Align Technology moved forward, perfecting its devices and marketing prowess. Today, Invisalign is in high demand and is seen not as an alternative to braces, but a fair competitor that offers the same results with a proven, yet different, system.
With a company of that size and a 20 year proven track record, Align is truly not a “fly-by-night” company! It is a force to be reckoned with every day. To me not offering Invisalign to a patient is almost malpractice, just as not offering implants instead of a bridge would be to a patient who has missing teeth.
